“I believe the more complicated a product becomes, the more likely it is to fail when your life depends on it.”

This is a quote from the designer of this week’s Badass Knife of the Week: the Blackbird SK-5 from Ontario Knife Company.

Designer Paul Sheiter eschews the gimmicks and add-ons often associated with survival knives in favor of a knife built to last with solid construction and quality materials.

It’s why the Blackbird SK-5 is considered one of the best survival knives on the market.

okc-blackbird-sideWhen this 10-inch knife is resting in your hard, it’s crystal clear the SK-5 is a no-nonsense knife. You won’t find any unnecessary bells and whistles but you will notice the tight construction.

The 5-inch blade is made from premium grade 154CM stainless steel, which can hold an edge even after taking a beating.

The comfortable Micarta handle is firmly attached to the full tang of the knife via stainless steel allen screws. Its rounded handle conforms to the hand perfectly, making it comfortable during extended use. The knife also comes with a nice nylon sheath that’s MOLLE compatible.

As designer Paul Sheiter puts it, the Blackbird SK-5 achieves maximum function through pure simplicity.
