The machete is one of the world's handiest blades. A cross between a knife and an ax, it can be used for everything from cutting and maintaining trails to chopping wood. If you happen to run into trouble in the great outdoors, you can even use a machete to defend yourself against a wild animal or a venomous snake.

Of course, that's only if you have a high-quality blade. Check out the Woodman's Pal Classic machete, which comes with a Cordura sheath and a honing stone. Weighing in at 23 ounches, with a blade 17 inches long, the Woodman's Pal is one of the most burly machetes on the market.

Handcrafted in Pennsylvania, with American materials, this machete works great for cutting and chopping brush up to 3 inches in diameter. It's constructed of high carbon steel and has a brown wood handle. Its Cordura sheath, which is one of the toughest fabrics made to man, will keep your blade at hand's reach when it's not in use. If your machete starts to dull, a honing store is included.

Pretty incredible actually. I like the fact that it comes sharpened satisfactorily. Very versatile. I've spent some time in the woods with it and found it very useful. A great chopper, surprisingly so, rivals the efficiency of a good hatchet. Unsure yet that I like the hand guard, seems like it would be useful, but it also scrapes my knuckles a little. I have other machetes, I think this one may win out as the favorite to carry based on versatility.

November 28, 2009

For years I have been in search of a quality machete that is all business rather than show. All I have been able to find are Asian made soft metal thin blade wannabes. This Woodman's Pal is the real deal, solidly built with enough mass to carry your stroke though whatever you are chopping. Well crafted and the leather handle offers a solid perch for even the sweatiest chores.

December 25, 2008

I love the quality and workmanship of the Woodman's Pal and it was obviously a product that was thought out by people "in the field" rather than on a drawing board in an office by men with soft hands. I actually hate to give anything top-notch ratings but I honestly can't find a gripe with this knife. It does what it's supposed to do and it does it well. It sharpens easily yet holds an edge reasonably well. It's a machete and an axe and a billhook all rolled up into one.

By Ken G. from College Station, TX
December 20, 2008

The Woodsman's Pal Premium Plus is a quality tool. You can feel the craftsmanship right out of the box. Additionally, this item is American Made which is something we should all look for in everything we buy. I recommend spending the extra money on engraving a name or initials into this item--that was the "icing on the cake" as this was a gift for my father. Plus...the folks at your website processed this order in a most efficient manner. I would buy from them again in a heartbeat.

By David R. from Mansfield, LA
November 28, 2006

When I buy something, no matter what it is, my first priority is dependability and longevity. With that said, more times than not that includes a hefty price tag. However, in the past I have spent fifty dollars spanning the course of three months for three different machetes, all of which I destroyed in a couple of days. Mind you, all I did was what the tool was designed to do. I am six foot three inches tall and two hundred and forty pounds, and can run like the wind.....very athletic for my size and I have been lifting weights for fifteen years. Basically, I bend cheaper machetes just removing two inch brush. The Woodsman's Pal is built like I am, like a brick house if you know what I'm saying. I can honestly say that this tool will last longer than I.

By Joel C. from Westland, MI
August 11, 2006

Recently, I decided to build a garage. In addition to a chainsaw and a pair of heavy duty pruning shears, I finally bought myself a Woodman's Pal. I have wanted one for years, but never really had a good reason--as if a male needs a reason to purchase another tool... I bought it mostly because of its looks--efficient. The large heavy blade with the hook made it look like it would do limbing and brush clearing more effectively than the pruning shears. I was right! After downing evergreens, birches, and many softwood poplars, the Woodman's Pal was faster for limbing than the shears and often faster and easier to use than the chainsaw for branches up to 1.5 inches in diameter. It is well balanced and not too heavy. After heavy use, just a couple passes with my diamond file makes it sharp enough to shave with. trees. Lastly, it would make a formidable defensive weapon if you aroused any animal's interest in the woods. A great tool at a very reasonable price.

By Thomas B. from Franklin , TN

June 28, 2006

This is a first class tool. The fit and finish are more than adequate but the variety of tasks that can be handled with this implement is were one finds the true value. One of the best buys I have ever made. This truly is the jack of all trades in the knife world. This knife is tough and well constructed and will give years of good service. I have all confidence in the Woodman's Pal as an all around survival tool and plan on taking it on every outing into the wilderness from here on out.

June 27, 2008

This was rated one of the best knives recently and it is rather unique. I enjoy using it, but tend to overdo it. It came with a sharpening stone which is great for the main blade, but tough to use on the hooked part. I need to get a cylindrical stone for that. The sheath makes it easy to carry. A leather strap for the handle would make it less apt to fly out of your hand, not that I've lost it yet. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with it!

By Danny S. from Rockmart, GA

I try to keep a path between our place and another not too far and the Woodman's Pal sure does make it easier. You won't be disappointed. I especially like the ability to cut the briar's at ground level.

It works great for cutting trail when we go hunting or hiking.

I'm still learning to use it, but so far I find it no better, and in some cases worse, than a regular machete. I use it to clear trails of blackberry and small elderberry trees. The machete has a longer reach and lighter blade, and cuts more cleanly. Perhaps with time I'll learn to love this, but not yet.

Well,I don't think the knife is very sharp. And I am not sure if I can put the right edge on it. You have to be very strong to do the things on the owners manual. No, I would not recommend it to someone else.

The "D" hand guard is hard on the back edge of your hand as you swing the Pal in the recommended hand-hold and swing described in the instructions. I would recommend heavy gloves or think about the wood handle with-out the "D" guard.

I wish I had just bought a regular machete. I tried using it several times and do not see the extra advantage of the Woodsman's Pal. The people I was working with got more done with their machete.
