I’ve said it countless times before but if you’re not following Steve Calvert’s Green Beetle YouTube channel, you’re doing something wrong with your life.

Steve is a national treasure (if you narrow the scope of “national” to knife community and “treasure” to nominally entertaining). I kid, of course, because Calvert makes some of the best knifemaking videos out there.

He usually conducts entertaining experiments and tries new things when making knives in his videos (like his ‘Murica Knife, which uses bacon, fries, beer, and Tums, and his most-viewed video on making a knife from a cable).

He’s back with another video in which he tries to forge a knife with drill shaving spirals. Take a look.

The best part of his videos, aside from his clear and concise explanation voiceovers and humorous musings, is his ability to point out when things go wrong and how he could improve in the future.

This video is the perfect amalgamation of what Steve does and the outcome is an understated but awesome blade made from unique materials.

Going through the whole process and seeing the journey the spiral drill shavings (combined with 1084 powdered steel) take to become a full-fledged knife is worth the 17 minutes.

I highly recommend subscribing to his channel and watching his whole backlog of videos. You won’t regret it.
