In 1939 Joseph Gerber hired a local knife maker to build 25 sets of kitchen cutlery to be given as Christmas gifts. The knives were so popular that Joseph Gerber left his advertising agency to start Gerber Legendary Blades®. The unique style and high quality manufacturing of Gerber cutlery soon developed wide spread acclaim. In fact, Gerber Legendary Blades are the only cutlery on display in New York’s famous Museum of Modern Art.

From very early on, Gerber collaborated with top knife designers, setting a standard of quality for everyone else to follow. Renowned designers such as Al Mar, Bob Loveless, Paul Poehlmann, "Blackie" Collins, William Harsey Jr. and Ernest Emerson have all designed knives for Gerber. In 2002 this tradition continued as Gerber released the Silver Trident™, designed by Chief James "Patches" Watson (U.S.N. Ret.) and Bill Harsey Jr.

Today, Gerber continues to design and manufacture unique, high quality outdoor recreation products. In 2003 we are proud to introduce the next generation of multi-tools: the Recoil™ Auto-Plier. By constantly utilizing new technology and innovative design to develop new products, Gerber continues to be an industry leader.

More Info

Designed cues for the new Prodigy were inspired by the award-winning LMF II, another knife engineered by Gerber's Jeff Freeman. The Prodigy is much smaller (9.75" overall length), but it certainly packs as much punch as its predecessor. The full tang, high-carbon stainless steel blade is beefy, and coated with black oxide for improved corrosion resistance and reduced visual signature. The ergonomic over-molded rubber handles ensures a soft, comfortable, but secure grip in all conditions. It's also MIRS complaint. Much like the knife, the sheath is designed to live up to the task with a friction-release thumb lock for security and a list of non-detection features. Noise is dampened thanks to a molded softgrip coating which, like the ballistic nylon material, is MIRS compliant. It's also MOLLE compatible and comes with a leg strap and two additional attachment straps for added security.

I purchased this knife in honor of my friend who served with me in the U.S.M.C. The Gerber Prodigy survival knife is priced economically and manufactured in the U.S. My buddy liked the balance, molle compatibility and handle. His view of the product is the utility of the blade and tactical application. All positive feedback in those requirements. Highly recommend Knife Depot. When you call them to place your order, you talk to a knowledgeable person who is not in a foreign country and that genuinely cares about your order. I will be ordering from Knife Depot for future knife purchases.

This knife is great, from its thick full tang blade to its well made sheath. This purchase was well worth the money and is very versatile.

I got my knife as a gift from my son...it's the same I used in the army...and yes,...it's American made. Best all around knife you will ever need.

Outstanding knife with good weight and sharpness. The sheath is very useful and quiet. I would have any of my friends buy this knife and several I've shown are going too!
